One of most common problems people may experience with their fireplace is due to the pilot light orifice, where the flame emerges, getting dirty causing a blockage.

Another common issue is the thermocouple, which is essentially a heat-sensitive device which keeps the pilot gas tube open the entire time that the pilot light is lit. The thermocouple actually generates a low electric current which acts as a signal to the gas valve.
